Education Programs


Respecting Individuality and Encouraging Awareness of Risks


Companywide Education and Training


NOF systematically supports employees to upskill through its education system. In order to develop people with technical and specialist knowledge, NOF also sends employees to external seminars and encourages them to acquire official qualifications.


Comprehensive Education and Training
NOF operates a skills development program for all employees. This program covers a wide range of skills?everything from management and finance to basic learning and specialist knowledge.

· 1,455 employees took part in the skills development program in fiscal 2004.
· 306 people made use of a correspondence course designed to encourage employee self-development.
· Through the creation of a companywide manual for production facility design, NOF is working to pass on technical skills to younger employees.

Promoting Specialist Education

To increase employee expertise, NOF actively encourages staff to take part in external courses and seminars.

· In fiscal 2004, expenditures for external courses as part of overall education expenses totaled ¥12 million.
· Developing people with specialist knowledge, not just general knowledge, is important for ensuring safety. In fiscal 2004, four members selected from each business site took part in a Safety Seminar, a specialist education program for safety technicians run by the Japan Society for Safety Engineering.

Helping Employees Acquire Official Qualifications

In fiscal 2004, a total of 229 people at NOF obtained official qualifications.

· 6 people obtained environmental-related qualifications
1 person became a hygiene supervisor, 1 person became an energy supervisor (electrical), 2 people obtained qualifications for supervising operations that use lead, and 2 people became pollution prevention supervisors.
· 179 people obtained safety-related qualifications
Hazardous materials officer (65 people); supervisor responsible for handling explosives (16 people); supervisor of work using organic solvents (19 people); supervisor of work involving specified chemical substances (15 people); and supervisor of anoxia work (16 people).

Education and Training at Sites


Annual Education Plan (ISO)
Each office prepares an annual education plan covering three items the environment, quality, and safety and health. This plan forms the basis for employee education. Such training is given at least once every month at the workplace level, with records of this training kept.


Transferring Technical Know-how
Transferring technical know-how related to production, maintenance and analysis is an important theme at NOF. The following activities are conducted in this regard.
(1) Learning courses tailored to qualifications and position
(2) Outside courses for acquiring skills
(3) Reexamination of work standards from a safety perspective
Based on these activities, NOF works to ensure that technical know-how in safety is also transferred.


Concrete Educational Content


NOF systematically provides safety education to employees (particularly new employees or those with limited experience) as well as to partner companies. The following specific education initiatives were taken in fiscal 2004:
(1) Bolstered safety education for haulage companies
(2) Safety education through KYT activities
(3) Education based on self-prepared safety education materials
(4) Technology exchange with overseas peer companies
