With the establishment of voluntary emission standards based on a safety ratio that is more stringent than standards specified by law, NOF has taken all possible steps to ensure that its operations remain within emission standards, even in the event that unusual conditions occur. At the same time, NOF is continuously working to reduce its impact on the environment. |

The following shows the status of certain emissions governed by laws to prevent atmospheric pollution. |
NOx
NOF Group emissions of NOx (oxides of nitrogen) in fiscal 2004 were 83.8 tons/year. Emissions at NOF CORPORATION were 79.0 tons, 0.5 tons less than the previous year.
In relation to NOx emissions, NOF plans to continue operating as it has in the past in the absence of any factors that could particularly affect emissions.
Emissions by affiliated companies were 4.8 tons, a 14% decrease on the previous year. |

NOF uses chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), an ozone-depleting substance, as a refrigerant in some of its refrigeration and cooling equipment. However, NOF carries out regular maintenance on this equipment as part of its stringent control of these substances. In fiscal 2004, the equivalent of 279kg/year of CFC-11 were emitted from equipment using CFCs at NOF. (Almost all the CFCs emitted were specified CFCs.) |
NOF has 2,164 machines that use CFC refrigerants. Of these, 264 use specified CFCs. The total volume of specified CFCs used in this equipment is equivalent to 304kg of CFC-11.
In fiscal 2004, NOF set the company-wide goal of completely phasing out machines using specified CFCs by the end of fiscal 2009. The company is working on a reduction plan to this end. |
In fiscal 2004, total emissions of voluntarily managed substances such as harmful atmospheric pollutants at NOF were 9.0 tons/year. This represented a 0.16-ton year-on-year increase due to a rise in volumes handled in line with higher production.
To reduce emissions in fiscal 2004, NOF made improvements to storage tank vents and took other steps to restrict volumes of atmospheric emissions. |

Plant Wastewater Output Volumes
NOF Group wastewater volume in fiscal 2004 was 5,984 thousand m3, 132 thousand m3 less year on year. NOF CORPORATION wastewater volume was 5,323 thousand m3, a decrease of 101 thousand m3 from the previous year. This decrease reflected the benefits of ongoing reduction measures, such as reviewing water cleansing techniques, despite a sharp increase in production volume.
Treated wastewater accounts for around 40% of plant wastewater volume, largely unchanged for the past 2-3 years. In fiscal 2004, 95% of factory wastewater was discharged in public waterways and 5% was discharged in sewerage systems. |

NOF pays careful attention to the prevention of soil contamination. There were no emissions of harmful substances to the soil in fiscal 2004. In fiscal 2005, NOF plans to conduct soil tests prior to the sale of land in Tokyo’s Kita Ward where the Oji Plant was located. |
There have been no infringements of environmental laws and regulations at NOF in the past five years. |
