The Nichiyu® PS Series of Brain Food Ingredients

Background
PS (phosphatidylserine) is a phospholipid found in large quantities in the brain and nervous system. As an important component of nerve cell membranes, PS is known to play a vital part in nerve functions.

PS derived from cow brains has been widely reported to contribute to an increase in brain activity. However, research in this field was halted following the appearance of BSE ("mad cow disease"). Subsequently, a technology was developed for the manufacture of soybean transfer PS made from soybean PC (phosphatidylcholine). A market for this substance emerged in the United States in 1998 centered on health food products. Today, a large number of health-conscious consumers believe very strongly in the benefits of PS.

As populations age and people of all ages must cope with a variety of stress, PS is attracting much attention as a new type of brain food.

Characteristics
Having completed work on a phospholipid production method that employs a base exchange reaction, NOF focused on the functions of PS and its market potential. In 2001, NOF developed a PS production method that conformed to Japan's Food Hygiene Law. Now the only supplier of PS in Japan, NOF manufactures the Nichiyu® PS Series. This series includes powders (50% PS content), liquids (25% PS content) and soluble compounds (2% PS content), among others. With this diversity, NOF can meet a diverse range of market needs.
