Polymer Grafting Technique

What is polymer grafting?
The polymer grafting technique is used to chemically bond two or more types of resin molecules. For example, as shown in the diagram on the right, two polymers that cannot be blended can be combined using polymer grafting (bottom left). This results in micro-phase separation that improves the characteristics of the primary polymer.
When there is no chemical bonding, the two polymers cannot be combined (bottom right). As a result, the phase separation becomes greater with time and the benefits of blending do not appear.
